Yesterday afternoon Room 6 and 7 went together to plan daffodil bulbs in the butterfly garden. This has been a part of learning about being kaitiaki (guardians) of the whenua (land) and connecting with our local community.

In our class, we have been learning about Matariki. In reading yesterday we talked about what Matariki is and how we can celebrate it as a holiday.
Below is our class' thinking about the benefits and negatives (yellow and black hat thinking in de bono hats) of having Matariki as a public holiday. There was some great critical thinking and discussion over the topic.

In Room 6 we had our class reward today for demonstrating the virtues of being kind, showing respect, having gratitude and seeking excellence. The students chose to spend time on Minecraft Education. They were set the task to create an enclosure for the animal they wrote about in their information reports.

For the Footstep Quest Challenge, Kiara and Zara-Mao designed different boats that would float. It is great to see students engaging in the Footstep Challenge.
The Footstep Question focuses on 5 different areas, giving, serving, academic, the arts and physical education.
This we have been learning about Samoan, some famous Samoan people and learning new phrases. Noah, Cataleya and Kiara have been helping the class pronounce our Samoan correctly.
We have been practicing saying the Sign of the Cross in Samoan I le Suafa o le Tama, ma le Alo, ma le Agaga Pa'ia. See the video below to learn how to say it.
This week Kiara showed the class her traditional Samoan dress and explained the importance of her bracelet. It was really special to learn about it.

Today Farrah and Despina shared for Celebration Friday.
Farrah and Despina both shared about their netball team from last year, and how teamwork is important in netball.
Despina also shared about her after school activities; art class and ballet. In art class she has been making a model of a whale.
This term we have been learning how to play hockey.
Today we focused on passing to each other and defending the ball. It is great to see the children enjoying this sport.
Today William showed us one of the defensive moves he has learned in karate. We also celebrated him being a yellow belt now.

NBC has been lucky enough to be asked to help design butterflies to be hung in the new butterfly garden in Rāwhiti Domain.
We took a trip on Tuesday to see the garden, we learnt about how the Monarch butterflies gather there and looked at different butterflies in New Zealand. See the butterflies we created in the picture below.
For the Footstep Quest Challenge, Lilia and Lynni created bird masks based on a native bird.
