Swimming

This week the kids have been doing an amazing job with their swimming lessons, practicing their gliding, learning to breath as they swim and strengthening their strokes and kicks. They have improved so much already, we have even been using the lane pool this year.

Summertime Reading Challenge

I was one of the winner in the summertime reading challenge from Aranui Library. Inside the price bag, there were a packet of jelly beans, a drink bottle, a powder bank charger, a phone holder, a pen, a colourful folder, a wooden bookmark with “Kia Ora “ on it, a CD and a book. I opened the packet of jelly beans and shared it with the staff at the library straight away because I was very excited and happy when I received the prize.

Saving the Dunes!

On Friday Room 6 went down to the beach to learn all about the sand dunes and why they are important. We got to make our own mini sand dunes, we learnt about the ladders used on paths to protect the dunes, the fencing using to trap the sand and the plant and insect life found on dunes.

It was such a great opportunity to learn about how the sand dunes protect our homes from the wind and sand and help to prevent coastal erosion. Learning about the different plant life such as the native and exotic ice plants and tussocks. Native plants encourage the dunes to grown wide and low and exotic plant varieties such as Maram grass encourage the dunes to grown tall and narrow.

This has been a part of inquiry learning about the importance of our local environment and what is important in our community.

What do you know about New Brighton's sand dunes?

Celebration Friday

Last Friday Mitchell brought in his ribbons for getting batter of the day, bowler of the day and player of the day in cricket. It was great to learn about the game of cricket and celebrate a successful season with Mitchell.

Do you play cricket or any sport?

Adventures of Liam

In February I went to Waimari Beach Golf course, I played 9 holes. It was lots of fun, my Dad took the first shot and I did the second shot.
In February it was also my birthday, all my cousins and aunties came over to celebrate. I got a soccer ball cake and my golf clubs.

In the weekend I went to Akaroa and visited the Giant's House, there are lots of water features and sculptures made out of mosaics. I enjoyed the part where is was like a maze because there were more parts of mosaic than the other places.

Zones of Regulation

In Ruma 6 we have been learning about the zones of regulation, there are four different zones we can be in; Red (angry), yellow (silly), green (calm and ready to learn) and blue is (melancholy, anxious).

On Friday we had fun learning about how music can make us feel different emotions and how one song can inspire people to respond differently. We also learnt about different strategies we can use to move from the red, yellow and blue zone to the green zone, such as going for walks, listening to music, spending time with pets, colouring, deep breathing, thinking of happy memories, and talking to someone.

See below Room 6 moving outside to the different zones.
